The Role of Continuing Medical Education in Increasing Enrollment in Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs.
Abstract PURPOSE: Opioid diversion, misuse, and abuse are rapidly growing problems in the United States; >60% of all drug overdose deaths involve an opioid. At least 49 states now have fully operational prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) to support legitimate medical use of controlled substances; however, there is considerable underutilization of such programs. METHODS: To increase awareness of PDMPs and their use, a continuing medical education program including 2 webcasts and a series of newsletters was offered to health care providers. Continuing medical education and pharmaceutical industry involvement: An evaluation of policies adopted by Canadian professional medical associations.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that Canadian PMAs' publicly available policies on industry involvement in CME are generally weak or non-existent; therefore, the accredited CME that is provided to Canadian physicians may be viewed as open to bias. We encourage all Canadian medical associations to strengthen their policies to avoid the potential for industry influence in CME. PMID: 28885217 [PubMed - in process]

Improving the Effect of FDA-Mandated Drug Safety Alerts with Internet-Based Continuing Medical Education.
Abstract The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires risk communication as an element of Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) to alert and educate healthcare providers about severe toxicities associated with approved drugs. The educational effectiveness of this approach has not been evaluated. To support the communication plan element of the ipilimumab REMS, a Medscape Safe Use Alert (SUA) letter was distributed by Medscape via email and mobile device distribution to clinicians specified in the REMS. This alert contained the FDA-approved Dear Healthcare Provider (DHCP) letter mandated for distri...

A modified Delphi study to establish consensus on continuing education requirements for pharmacists' relicensing in Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSIONS: This study used the modified Delphi technique to develop a suggested CPD model for pharmacists' re-registration in Saudi Arabia. Expert panel members reached consensus on shifting from a CME model to a CPD model, increasing CPD credits to 40 per annum and incorporating unplanned CPD activities, while keeping re-registration to every two years.PMID:35993624 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202208_29397

The need for a comprehensive medication safety module in medical education
Conclusion: The relatively poor knowledge and improvement with a specific educational module emphasizes the need of such a module within the medical curriculum to encourage safe use of medicines by Indian Medical Graduates (IMG). It is hoped that the policy makers in medical education will introduce such a module within the medical curriculum. Key message: Students have a relatively poor knowledge of medication safety issues. There is a need for specific learning modules in the area of medication safety within the medical curriculum and also in continuing medical education programs.
